Politics

My record
in politics

For over 40 years, I’ve been driven by a deep commitment to progressive and pragmatic politics, starting as a Wallasey sixth former frustrated by the lack of opportunity in my community. Deterred from joining Labour by the divisive tactics of Derek Hatton and Militant Tendency in Merseyside, I was initially led to the SDP/Liberal Democrats. There, I was the National Chair of the Student Democrats in 1990, served on the Federal Executive, and co-founded The Reformer, a key policy journal supporting Charles Kennedy’s leadership.

Tony Blair’s visionary leadership brought me home to Labour, where I’ve been active since 1995. My contributions span roles as ward organiser in Vauxhall, campaign manager in Wirral South, councillor in Peckham, and Chair of the Labour Group on Southwark Council. Today, I am an Honorary Alderman of Southwark and serve as Vice Chair of SME4Labour, amplifying the voice of SMEs within the party.

Inspired by my wife, Johanna Baxter, now MP for Paisley and Renfrewshire South, I’ve seen firsthand her dedication to championing low-paid workers and negotiating meaningful pay rises. Now, more than ever, I stand against rising populism, advocating for reflective and inclusive solutions that unite rather than divide society. Progress demands courage, collaboration, and vision.
