Congratulations to Johanna Baxter MP, the Member of Parliament for Paisley and Renfrewshire South, on her appointment as Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.
PPS roles do not always attract the attention they deserve, but they are a significant part of how the Government actually works, offering Members a close view of a department from the inside and a chance to support its Ministers in delivering on their priorities. For the FCDO, that is a serious brief at a serious moment, with the international picture as unsettled as it has been for many years.
In her own statement on the appointment, Johanna set out how she sees the work ahead, and how she intends to combine it with her continued focus on the people she represents in Paisley and Renfrewshire South:
“I am honoured to have been appointed Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. I look forward to working with colleagues across the department and supporting their vital work in promoting this Labour Government’s commitment to acting in the UK national interest.
At a time when global events are at the most volatile in living memory, our Government remains focused on strengthening our partnerships with allies around the world, whilst building new relationships with like-minded partners. I look forward to playing my part in delivering that mission.
While I take on this new responsibility in Parliament my priority remains the same, standing up for the people of Paisley and Renfrewshire South. I will continue working hard on the issues that matter most locally, tackling the cost of living, fighting for investment in our high streets including the Paisley Centre, fairer franchising legislation and helping people into good work.”
It is always good to see Parliamentarians taking on national responsibilities while keeping their constituency work at the heart of what they do. Many congratulations to Johanna on a very well-earned appointment.
